Here Comes The Hectic…
I knew the next few months would be busy but oh my I hadn’t
anticipated this! As it’s been busy, I’ve just highlighted the main things I’ve
been working on this month.. there’s too much to let you know absolutely
everything I’ve done…
* Trustee Board met with the University who have agreed to
set up a review group, to look at long term planning for the SU. It will review
all provisions, the affect on students, outreach and other areas. The board
will consist of external trustees, university executive members and independent
individuals who have worked in both sectors. Short term we will be working with
the University closely to look at our current financial situation and long term
the group will prepare the scope and plans for subsequent years.
* We have ceased all campaigning whilst negotiations are
underway with the University.
* At current there will be no added charges to sports teams.
#NUSGlobalResearchExchangeArgentina
* Both one of the members of staff at Swansea SU and myself,
are currently writing up the report for research we conducted back in November.
* The estimated completion day for the report is the 9th
February 2014.
* I’ve been working very closely with our LGBT societies and
officers in designing campaigns and plans for LGBT History Month.
* We have set up a series of workshops, campaigns, videos
and plans across our three regions for the month.
* South Wales Police have also approached me in request that
we do some hate crime awareness campaigning. I have organized certain videos
that highlight this and have created contact banners for it.
#SLTAChangeAgents
* I ran a recruitment process to enable three change agents
in the regions. We now have three change agents that will carry our Academic
Manifesto forward.
* The Sabbaticals also created a video for Student Stories,
which outlines the manifesto and it’s progress.
* I designed training for the Change agents, which will take
place early next month.
* I also sat with a panel of students from each region, to
begin mapping out and planning the representative and teaching awards.
* We hosted the AGM across our three regions via media
stream.
* After a disappointing turn out from our Cardiff and
Pontypridd regions, we were deemed unquorate and unable to proceed with the
meeting.
* NUS appointed chair Hannah Pudner forwarded the articles
and proposals to the next student council meeting.
* Sabbaticals stayed behind to answer any questions
concerning students had.
* Turn out for the Cardiff Region was 11, Pontypridd was 15
and Newport was 51. Number needed for quoracy was 100.
#Charity
* Our RAG are now running treks to Kilimanjaro, Inca, London
to Paris bike ride and Bratislava or bust car rally for various charities.
* In aid of LGBT history month we are also now doing a lift
off for love charity balloon race. You can get yours at the union reception
now.
* We are also running our annual 6 nations sweep stake in
the Union :D!
* Our RAG also has a number of plans for next month, all in
the name of charity.
#NSS
* The NSS survey has kicked off and we have been postering
and plaguing student to share their views. I’ve also created the annual gigant
NSS in the window of Treforest SU. If you’re a third year and haven’t yet
filled the survey in please do so… you could win £100!!
#EndOfYearEvent
* After student feedback and thoughts were collected, we
looked at running regionalized end of year events that would go ahead if a
certain threshold of individuals bought tickets.
* I also published the May ball accounts for the year 12-13
via my blog.
* Trustee board agreed that if 400 tickets were sold in the
relevant region that the events could go ahead. Details of the event would
depend on uptake of the tickets.
* We have also looked at an alternate event to take place in
April, which will act as a fundraiser for the end of year events.
#CampusDevelopments
* Glyntaff SU space building work has now been completed and
is being actively used as a social space. We have one or two adjustments to
make to the area, but the respons
e we’ve had from students so far has been positive.
e we’ve had from students so far has been positive.
* I’m still working with the estates department with regards
to the side gate. We are waiting on the IT department to assess and provide a
report on the networking and analytics before contracting the work.
* The University has assured me that they will be taking on
the cash machines at Caerleon. They have also accepted comments with regards to
the IT changes, which are due to be brought up in the next University ICT
meeting.
* Atrium II is still underway, we are still negotiating
catering provisions with regards to equipment etc. The scope for provision at
Atrium II will also fall under the scope for the Union as a whole, which is
being explored by the Directorate/Trustee Board sub-group.
